One of the four museums that form the Metropolitan Organization of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki (MOMus) is the well-known until a few years ago "The Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art", the first of its kind in Greece, was founded in 1979. It now operates with its new name, as "Museum of Contemporary Art - Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art and State Museum of Contemporary Art Collections " within the Thessaloniki International Exhibition, while undertaking the organization of the Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art.
The museum manages the collections of Iola, Xydi, Apergi, and the other collections and works of contemporary art of the Foundation "Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art", the collections of contemporary art of the State Museum of Contemporary Art, and the collection of sculptures of the Foundation "Museum of Contemporary Art Alex Mylonas". The museum studies the currents of contemporary art in Greece and abroad, saving and highlighting its artistic achievements. The permanent collection includes more than 2000 works by Greek and foreign artists, while the exhibits are periodically renewed. The library of the Museum has about 2500 titles of books and magazines about painting, sculpture, engraving, architecture, and photography, while all the publications of the Foundation itself are included. The audiovisual material and the archives of the Museum are available to the public.
