Chestnut Forest

Paiko is the largest chestnut forest in Greece.

On the mountain there are about 4,500 acres of chestnuts, of which 2,500 are cultivable.

Around 300 families have chestnut as their second occupation and it is estimated that the annual production reaches 500-600 tons, depending on the year. Due to the climate prevailing in the area, the chestnut produced is very sweet and tasty.

The chestnut groves of Paiko are in a period of prosperity, as most of the production is exported to neighboring Italy, reminding the ancients of the difficult times, when the so-called "bread tree" provided the inhabitants with one of their staple foods.
