Travelling exhibition "From counter stern to stem: Sailing ships of the 18th and 19th centuries"
Friday 8 September 2023 - Friday 29 December 2023
Thessaloniki
The central idea of the research program is the creation of 3D digital representations using virtual and augmented reality, from ships of past eras, for which there are sufficient original materials for their representation (drawings, photographs, technical descriptions, 3D physical models to scale, etc.) both in terms of their form and construction.
The proposal highlights and captures the woodworking tradition of the Greeks, one of the greatest chapters of Greek technical culture, which is not yet sufficiently documented.
The exhibition includes historical data on the sailing shipping of the Greeks during the 18th and 19th centuries, information on the most representative sailing ships, starting with three ships for which a 3D rendering was created, information on life on board, the voyages, the large ports of the time, woodworking.
Visitors can design and "build" their own boat through a virtual interactive game.
In addition, the public has the possibility of a virtual visit to a 19th century sailing ship, applying interactive methods, which offer visitors an experiential cultural experience using virtual reality (VR) and expand their knowledge using additional information and images of augmented reality ( AR).
With the development of an "open lab" at the exhibition site, one will be able to see how 19th century sailing ships were built and "rigged" through the modeling process, which will be presented live at the exhibition.
Thus, the familiarization with the shipbuilding tradition, which is an element of the intangible cultural heritage of Greece, is done in the most direct and experiential way that makes the knowledge a fun experience for everyone.
