Statue of Liberty in Axioupoli
The monument of the First World War
In the central square of Axioupolis, the monument of the city in honor of the victims of the First World War is placed. The area is dominated by the impressive "Statue of Liberty", the work of the sculptor Demosthenes G. Papagiannis, created in 1926 and unveiled three years later.
The work presents Eleftheria, with a parchment in her hand, supporting an Evzone soldier who finds death. The monument was originally erected on the adjacent hill before being moved to the square, where it also changed location until it remains today, becoming a symbol of the city. The plates of the base mention the names of the heroes, as well as an inscription for the eternal memory of the fallen in favor of the homeland of the period 1917-1918.
