Ancient Theater of Mieza

From Hellenistic Splendor to Roman Glory

The ancient theatre was discovered in 1992, during irrigation network construction works on the slope of a hill, in the Belovina area of Kopanos, in the Municipality of Naousa.

The theatre was associated with the large public complex of the Gymnasium of Mieza, located 200 m to its north-northeast. It went through three construction phases: the earliest dates to the Hellenistic period, the second was built after the mid-2nd century BC, and the third phase — to which its current form belongs — dates to the 2nd century AD.

The semi-circular cavea of the theatre has four stairways, dividing it into five seating sections, with a capacity of up to 2,000 spectators. The orchestra has a diameter of 22 m. On its eastern side, the stage building survives, with a proskenion, stage, and two backstage rooms. The theatre remained in use until the 4th century AD.
