Archaeological Site of Saint Patapios in Veria

One of the Most Significant Christian Monuments in the Region

The archaeological site of Agios Patapios was the center of ancient and early Christian Veria. It is the only open archaeological site in the city, with finds that demonstrate the urban continuity of Veria from the 2nd century up to the late post-Byzantine period.

A special place within the site is held by the religious buildings of the 4th and 5th centuries, which were discovered in the immediate surroundings of the post-Byzantine church of St. Patapios (16th century), preserved intact to this day. These include an early Christian baptistery (4th century), on the ruins of which a large early Christian basilica (5th century) was built. Also preserved at the site are rare mosaic floors that impress visitors and testify to the high level of artistry developed in the region during the early Christian period.
