Ancient Theater of Mieza

The recent impressive discovery in the ancient city

Located east of Naousa, at the foot of Vermio, Mieza was one of the most important cities of ancient Imathia. The significant discovery of its ancient theater, on the slope of a hill, took place relatively recently in 1992 during the excavation works for an irrigation network. The archaeological research that followed in the subsequent years brought to light a peculiar construction that combines Hellenistic and Roman elements, dating the theater to approximately the 2nd century BC.

The semi-circular structure has four ascending staircases that divide the hollow into five tiers. It is estimated that when it was in operation, the theater could accommodate up to 2,000 spectators. The orchestra has a diameter of 22 meters, while the southern stage, sections of walls, and the corner of a building from the same period are preserved. It is believed that the theater was completed in three different construction phases and operated until the 4th century AD.

The ancient theater of Mieza is open to visitors, with free entrance and easy access following the road signs. It is located approximately 6 kilometers away from the center of Naousa.
