An ancient city revealed

Morrylos, an important ancient city located in the prefecture of Kilkis, is slowly revealing its secrets through excavations and studies. Historically, the city was known for its cultural and religious wealth, as evidenced by the findings that have come to light. In 1933, accidental statues of Asclepius and members of his family were discovered in the settlement of Ano Apostoloi. These finds date back to the Hellenistic period and are on display in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.

The importance of Morrylos was confirmed by the rescue excavation of 2002, when the remains of buildings near the Primary School, probably belonging to the Asclepius of the city, were uncovered. The most recent excavation in 2020 revealed parts of the urban fabric of Morrylos, offering new evidence of the structure and development of the ancient city. Important finds include tombstones, honorary resolutions and other discoveries that highlight the importance of Morrile in antiquity. The excavation continues, constantly revealing new information about the history and heritage of the area.
