The Museum of Byzantine Culture

The Museum of Byzantine Culture was inaugurated in Thessaloniki in 1994, with its first periodical exhibition "Byzantine Treasures of Thessaloniki. The return journey ".

The Museum is located in the center of the city, on 2 Stratou Avenue, across from Pedion tou Areos.

The eleven rooms of the permanent exhibition of the Museum opened to the public gradually from 1997 to the beginning of 2004. In an area of 3,430 sq.m., they are presented through authentic exhibits, coming mainly from Thessaloniki but also Macedonia in general, of supervisory material and multimedia, aspects of Byzantine and post-Byzantine culture, through individual themes, and following the established periodization of Byzantine history and art, with special emphasis on the even and imaginative museographic and artistic design. There are 3190 archeological objects, relics, and works of art from the 46,000 and more included in its collections, which date from the 2nd to the 20th century AD.

Visitors after the reception area enter and proceed to an inner "road" with a helical ascending path to reach the level from which he started through a large-scale descent. This street unifies the exhibition spaces while allowing visitors to choose, that is, to visit a specific room without necessarily seeing the previous ones. "This opposite course-room relationship, which is intensified by the different processing of materials, characterizes the quality of the Museum's interior." The lighting of the course is made from inner courtyards and windows - glazing, while the lighting of the rooms from the superstructure with sun protection elements.

Outgoing and incoming visitors to the reception area of the Museum have the opportunity to be informed through a specific application, the electronic platform "Exploring the world of Byzantium", a creation of the European Center of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments, for the individual aspects of everyday life. , which is completely in line with the museological reasoning of the Museum and its pedagogical character.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum hosts periodic and touring exhibitions. It also participates in exhibitions with exhibit lending.
