The "Kamara" meeting point
One of the most emblematic monuments of Thessaloniki - and certainly the most popular meeting point - is the Triumphal Arch of Galerius. Known today as "Kamara", part of the majestic Roman Palaces that still survive in the area, was built shortly after the installation of Caesar Galerius in the city, in the early 4th century AD. Purely commemorative, it was built to honor Galerius' final victory over the Persians.
The Arch was connected to the Rotοnda to the north and the main Palace to the west and its "arch" which is today located on Egnatia Street, in the center of Thessaloniki, is part of a larger memorial structure. The reliefs on its sides narrate the war achievements of the Roman troops under Galerius against the Persians and, in addition to their decorative character, give historical information about this campaign.
