Yeni Mosque

The only surviving mosque from the Ottoman period in Edessa is the Geni Mosque ("New Mosque"). It is preserved unchanged, without changes in its architectural structure, which has been influenced by the Byzantine and especially the Hagia Sophia of Constantinople. Various elements place its construction in the 17th century and since 1937 it has been declared a protected monument.

The Yeni Mosque is 16 meters high and its dimensions are 16 x 20 meters. Inside, detailed decorative representations are preserved in the dome, while a feature of the construction is the 33 windows from which the space was illuminated. The monument is the only complete mosque of the many that the city had during the Turkish occupation, as the rest were destroyed or altered. Archaeological finds of the area are kept in the area today.
