Jewish Synagogue of Veria
Jewish Synagogue of Veria
One of the Oldest in Europe
While strolling through the beautiful and picturesque Jewish quarter of "Barbuta" in Veria, the stone building of the historic Synagogue stands out, both as an architectural monument and as a symbol of Jewish presence in the city, dating back to before the Apostle Paul's visit to the region. It is the oldest synagogue in Northern Greece and one of the oldest in Europe, built in its current form in the mid-19th century on the site of the ancient Jewish Synagogue.
The vibrant colors, combined with the stunning carved wooden ceilings and unique mosaics, give an artistic character to the building, which is still occasionally used as a place of prayer for Jewish visitors . Until the mid-World War II period, when the numerous Jewish community of the city was decimated by the occupying forces, it served as the center of religious and social life for the Jews. Today, the Synagogue is open to visitors daily.
