Yeni Mosque (Old Archaeological Museum)
Yeni Mosque (Old Archaeological Museum)
One of the most beautiful buildings in Thessaloniki
Characterized by many as "the most beautiful building in Thessaloniki," the Yeni Mosque is undoubtedly a rare architectural masterpiece not only of the city but also of its era. Designed by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli, who also left his mark on many other famous buildings in Thessaloniki during that period, it was constructed in 1902 and is the last mosque built in the city, shortly before its liberation. The building consists of two floors and incorporates elements from various architectural styles, making the result impressive and unique.
Initially, the Yeni Mosque served as a place of worship for the converted Jewish population of the city, known as the "Donmeh." After population exchanges, it then hosted refugees from the Asia Minor Catastrophe. From 1925 to 1963, it housed the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki and is still known today as the "Old Archaeological Museum." Although it belongs to the municipality and operates as an exhibition space, it also has a museum collection in its courtyard.
