Bezesteni

One of the oldest Turkish buildings located in the center of the city of Serres is Bezesteni, which was probably built-in 1385.

It is a large rectangular building, which is covered with six spherical domes, which are supported internally by zigzag arches. The building has four large entrances and its name comes from the Arabic-Persian word "bezesteni", which means "fabric market".

 Covered markets were a common sight in Muslim cities, following the example of the conquered Byzantines. In all of Greece, only two Bezestenias survive, from Serres and Thessaloniki. Today, its premises host the Archaeological Museum of Serres.
