Church of Agios Dimitrios

The Church of Agios Dimitrios is dedicated to Agios Dimitrios, the patron saint of the city.

The temple, which was renovated in the 7th century, after destruction due to fire, is one of the most important early Christian temples as well as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Visitors can worship the relics of Saint Dimitrios, which are kept in a silver shrine inside the Temple, while the memory of the Saint is celebrated on October 26, where one can watch the procession of the relics and the image of the Saint in the city streets. The church is located in the center of the city, on Agiou Dimitriou Street. The church preserves many capitals from the basilica of the 5th century, while part of the colorful orthomarbling of the 5th century (covering the walls with marble slabs) is preserved in the central part of the narthex. Of the many mosaic offerings of the faithful to the Saint, some were saved from the fire of 1917 and date from the 5th to the 9th century and visitors have the opportunity to admire them along with the rest of the mosaics, inscriptions, and representations on the walls of the Temple.
