Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Ano Skotina

The Traditional Church of 1862 at an Altitude of 600 Meters

Situated on the southeastern slopes of Mount Olympus at an altitude of 600 meters, a notable attraction in the traditional settlement of Ano Skotina is the imposing Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos, located in the center of the village. This church follows the architectural style of a three-aisled basilica with a dome, known as "gynaikonitis," a type prevalent in the mountainous villages and craftsman settlements of the region during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The church was constructed in 1862 under the personal care of Patriarch Callinicus of Alexandria, who was from Skotina. It was built on the site of an older church with the same name and stands today as one of the most characteristic examples of ecclesiastical architecture of its era. It harmoniously integrates into the mountainous, traditional landscape of the village. The village of Ano Skotina is about an hour's drive away from Katerini.
