Monastery of Agia Kiraki of Loutro

The monastery in the middle of the plain, next to Aliakmonas

About two kilometers from the village of Loutros, between Alexandria and Veria, on the banks of the river Aliakmonas, is the Monastery of Agia Kyriaki. In the center of the plain a cluster of beautiful, tall trees surrounding it, and in contrast to the rest of the surrounding landscape of fields, the monastery is today one of the most important pilgrimages of the region.

It took its name from the icon of Saint Kyriaki, sister of Saint Dionysius of Olympus, found at the site. Initially, the residents built a small wooden church there in 1914 and since 1961 the nunnery was organized, with the addition of buildings, facilities and a guest house for visitors. It is celebrated on July 7, in memory of St. Kyriaki, the Holy Great Martyr.
