Holy Monastery of Timios Prodromos

In a deep canyon of Mount Menoiki, at a distance of about 12 kilometers from the city of Serres, is the Holy Monastery of Timios Prodromos, which due to its long tradition is one of the most important and historic monastic centers of Macedonia. Its foundation dates back to 1275-1278 by the monk who lived in Serres Ioannikios.

The center of the monastery is a building of the 14th century and around it are organized the other buildings: Cells, abbot, school, bank, library, and guest house. The fresco painting started from 1300 to 1333 and was continued in different periods by different painters.

The current form of the monastery, which operates to this day, was formed with the addition of various buildings during the Turkish occupation.
