The Neo-Gothic Catholic Church in the centre of Thessaloniki
The Catholic Cathedral of the Ascension of Mary, also known as the Catholic Church of Thessaloniki, is one of the most important Catholic churches in Thessaloniki. It is located in the city centre, on Frangon Street, and is a central point for the Catholic community of the area.
The church was built in 1897 by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli, who designed many other important buildings in Thessaloniki. Its architectural style is neo-Gothic, typical of the period, with imposing arches, ornate stained glass windows and distinctive decorative elements that give the church a special character.
The church is dedicated to the Ascension of the Virgin Mary, one of the most important doctrinal truths of the Catholic Church, which honours the Virgin Mary as a saint from the moment of her conception, free from original sin. Inside the church, visitors can admire the impressive stained glass windows and religious artwork that adorn the space.
The Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary has been damaged throughout its history, including during the 1978 earthquake, but it was renovated and continues to function as a center of worship and gathering for the Catholic faithful of Thessaloniki. In addition to being a religious site, the church is also a cultural landmark in the city, often hosting classical music concerts and other cultural events.
