“40 Kamares” Cave

A special cave in Naoussa with exciting routes for the adventurous explorers

The Cave "40 Kamares" is located on the northern outskirts of Naoussa, near the Siasaki stream. It is the most famous cave in the area and one of the most unique in the world, as, unlike the usual cave openings in limestone or marble, the cave "40 Kamares" opens in calcium carbonate (travertine), i.e. around plant matter such as roots, trunks, leaves and branches.

The cave became widely known after the adventure of three children who got lost in its corridors in 1994 and were rescued. Folk tradition has attributed several stories to it, ranging between history and myth. It has easy and comfortable access, with a spacious entrance, which makes it attractive for explorers and lovers of the unique natural environment at the site.

The original cave passage, about 150 meters long, is transformed into small chambers (hence the "Kamares" of the name). There are comfortable but narrow passages, while some parts require a little climbing, and the large chamber before the end of the cave hides a wonderful surprise for the adventurous, with petrified tree trunks up to five meters high. Bats and insects are the 'inhabitants' of the cave, which is overrun by impressive stalagmites, stalactites, and 'coral' that testify to the existence of a once underground river.

The "40 Arches" (or "40 Ountades") offer a fascinating exploration, with the right equipment and the necessary precautions.
