Old Metropolis of Veria

The jewel of Byzantine Veria

The Old Metropolis of Veria, built at the end of the 11th and the beginning of the 12th century by Bishop Nikitas, is one of the largest Middle Byzantine basilicas in the Balkans.

Its architecture, reminiscent of the Church of Saint Demetrios in Thessaloniki, incorporates early Christian models and impresses with its 12th–14th century fresco decoration. After its restoration in 2016, the monument is open to visitors, offering a vivid journey through the Byzantine history of Veria.
