Panagia Dexia Neighborhood in Veria
An Authentic Atmosphere in a Traditional Historical Quarter of the City
This preserved neighborhood of Veria stretches along the Tripotamos River and is located very close to the city center, right next to the central market.
Unlike other traditional districts of Veria, known for their dense presence of religious monuments, here we find a limited number of churches. Among them are the parish church of Panagia Dexia, as well as the churches of Agios Nikolaos and Agia Paraskevi.
The church of Panagia Dexia was built in the early 19th century on the site of a 14th-century Byzantine church. Only a few architectural elements of the older church have survived, such as parts of the sanctuary’s apse and the eastern façade, which still preserve significant frescoes.
