Agios Athanasios
Agios Athanasios
The "Stone Village"
The "Stone Village" of Kaimaktsalan, which endured isolated and self-sufficient for centuries on a plateau near the border and its inhabitants abandoned it and returned. Built with unique Macedonian architecture, with wood, hewn stone, and minimal metal, it is hidden at the foot of the North since the 16th century and witnessed all the historical rearrangements and conflicts of the area.
Agios Athanasios (old Tsegani) is located at an altitude of 1200 meters and is 30 kilometers from Edessa. Its inhabitants built Neos Agios Athanasios, a few kilometers lower, in the 80s, but gradually began to return, taking advantage of the creation of roads, the absence of which was previously an obstacle to communication with urban centers, but also it's opening. Kaimaktsalan Ski Center highlighted the traditional settlement as an agritourism destination and a point of admiration for mountain visitors for its special layout.
Today, the approximately 300 inhabitants of the beautiful mountain village take care of providing hospitality, catering, and activities to the visitors of Kaimaktsalan and the nature lovers who come up to discover it.
