Agios Mamas

The tourist resort where the famous festival takes place

Agios Mamas is located five kilometers east of Nea Moudania and is home to approximately 1,000 residents engaged in agriculture and tourism. Situated north of the canal of Nea Potidea, which separates it from the homonymous wetland featuring a diverse bird population, Agios Mamas has a rich history. Archaeological findings date human presence in the area back to 5,000 BC, while the village itself appears in documents from a millennium ago. Just outside the settlement, there is the unique organized cemetery from the Early Bronze Age, which was relatively recently discovered in 1992.

Agios Mamas is known for its olive production from its fertile plains. Additionally, at the beginning of every September, it hosts the largest trade fair in Northern Greece, a tradition that dates to the 19th century. During the summer months, its vast beach attracts vacationers, and the area around the sea has developed to accommodate the tourist needs of visitors with hotels and rental rooms. It is situated approximately 70 kilometers from Thessaloniki, and its location between the first and second leg makes it an ideal starting point for exploring all Halkidiki.
