A day in paradise at Skra Falls

The nature-blessed spot where the waterfalls form the heavenly landscape of the 'Emerald' Lake in Skra, Kilkis is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We were experiencing it for the second time, as we had visited the area again in the past. But we chose to do it in summer, with our mind on diving in the crystal clear waters that we had not dared to do on the previous visit.

The journey from Thessaloniki to the village is about an hour and a half. We arrived early, parked and immediately started the hike, which takes about 30 minutes at a leisurely pace and with the help of the signage that the local operators have made sure to direct you without any problems. In the backpacks we had made sure to carry water and food for the hours we would spend buried in the heart of the forest, but the route is relatively easy and the weight does not bother you much.

As you approach the falls, you are guided by the sound of the water falling from a great height, which can be heard for several minutes before you see them up close. At the sight of them you are overwhelmed by a wonderful feeling of calmness and relaxation, combined with the almost still waters of the blue-green, truly "emerald" lake that forms below. We arranged the things and dived into the waters, which invited us to embrace us, crystal clear and with intense color combinations between blue and green, from the reflection of the light and the metallic elements they contain. The term 'cooling off' couldn't be more apt.

The problem we faced again was our inability to stop taking pictures. The heavenly scenery challenges you to capture it, every point feels like it deserves to remain forever as a memory in your archive and the truth is that few places can do that. But at some point we had to return to the village, to regain strength, with the return hike ahead of us.

In Skra we tucked into a small tavern and appreciated all the dishes that came to our table, especially the local cheeses and the wine of the area. We settled in with a short wander through the narrows, enjoying the view and surrounding scenery, feeling full and refreshed. Just before nightfall, we made our way back. Until next time, of course, when we need a dose of heaven to recharge our batteries in a matter of hours.
