Latomou Monastery

The small church of Saint David was the central church of the Monastery of the Savior Christ in Upper Town, known as "Latomou Monastery" from the stone quarries in the area. Built-in the 5th century, it is one of the most important early Christian monuments in Thessaloniki, which was converted into a mosque in the Ottoman period of the city and re-dedicated to Christian worship in 1921, operating since then as a temple.

The monastery is known for its rare mosaic, the so-called "Vision of Ezekiel", which dates to the end of the 5th century and has been saved in excellent condition. On the north wall of the church, there are frescoes of the 12th century, characteristic examples of the prosperity in the hagiographic art that Thessaloniki experienced during the mid-Byzantine period.
