A Landmark of Education and Philosophy in Ancient Macedonia

The ancient city of Mieza, located in the heart of the ancient Macedonian kingdom, was one of its most important cities.

It took its name from the daughter of King Beres, who was the son of the mythical Makedon. According to myth, Mieza was the sister of Veria and Olganos, who was transformed into the river Arapitsa of Naousa.

In a Late Bronze Age mound (toumba) located near the later city, the earliest traces of human presence have been found. Mieza was organized and acquired an urban character during the reign of Philip II (359–336 BC). From then began its period of prosperity, reaching its peak in the Hellenistic period, after the campaign of Alexander the Great. Mieza was the birthplace of Peucestas, a trierarch (naval commander) of Alexander the Great.
