Thessaloniki History Centre

The Thessaloniki History Centre (THC) is located in the historic centre of the city, in Hippodrome Square, in a building that is a typical example of interwar architecture.

The building, originally constructed for other uses, was converted into a cultural space in the early 1980s, when the Thessaloniki History Centre was established in 1983. The creation of the KITH was the result of the need to gather and promote the rich historical heritage of Thessaloniki and the wider region of Macedonia.

The architecture of the building is characterised by a simple and functional line, typical of interwar modernism. The building retains its historic character and incorporates elements reflecting the architectural aesthetics of the period, with simple geometric forms and harmonious symmetry.

The KIF contains an extensive collection of historical documents, archives, photographs, and maps documenting the diverse history of Thessaloniki. Its library is equipped with rare and valuable books, magazines and newspapers covering a variety of historical periods, from the Ottoman era to the modern 20th century. The Centre is also an important place for research and study, offering researchers valuable material for the study of local history.

In addition, the KIF organises exhibitions, lectures and educational programmes, which strengthen the connection of citizens with the history of their city and promote the preservation of Thessaloniki's cultural heritage.
