Macedonian Tombs of Aggista Station

The unique burial monuments of the ancient Macedonians in the region of Serres

In the shadow of Paggaio, on a green hill near the small village of Aggista Station and the archaeological site of Amphipolis, the discovery of a burial mound from the 3rd century BC is believed to testify to the existence of a large ancient Necropolis. In the area, the archaeological excavation so far has brought to light two Macedonian Tombs ("A" and "B"), of which the first is visitable and really impressive.

The "Macedonian Tomb A" has the appearance of a temple and consists of an antechamber and a burial chamber. Inside, there is the deathbed with very strong decorative elements, characteristic of ancient Macedonian tombs. The "Macedonian Tomb B" was located in the centre of the village and, although it was destroyed during the Second World War, inside it preserves an equally interesting marble deathbed.

The two Macedonian Tombs are unique monuments of their type for the region of Serres.
