Port of Amphipolis

The 'natural' port where the campaign of Alexander the Great began

Since ancient times, the natural port at the entrance of the Strymon was a hub for maritime transport. At a distance of 2.5 km from the Kasta Tomb, it was used by Alexander the Great as the starting point for his campaign in Asia, while in modern times it was used to transport war material to the border forts in World War II.

The port facilities were used until 1969 when the railway connection to the rest of the network via Nea Zichni was discontinued. Today it is a simple shelter for fishing boats with three floating piers, although it also has accommodation facilities for tourist boats. In the surrounding area, there are still scattered gun emplacements that protect the port, while the close distance from the archaeological site of Amphipolis offers a beautiful hiking route to the port used by the ancient Macedonians.
