Ancient Olynthos

The famous capital of Chalkida

One of the most important ancient cities, ancient Olynthos, is built on the shores of the Toroneos Gulf in Halkidiki, on two hills that dominate the area. The famous capital of Chalkideon, from the last decades of the 5th century BC. and until its destruction by Philip in 348 BC, was the most important economic-military center of the region.

The site is fenced and the entrance is at the southwestern base of the hills, where the archaeologist's outpost is located. The archaeological site is toured only by hiking. During four excavations, most of the city was explored and one of the best examples of urban planning, using the Hippodamian system, and residential architecture from the classical era came to light. The research provided important new data on the daily life of the ancient Greeks of the post-classical period.
