The Tower of Prosforion in Ouranoupoli

The treasures of the tallest tower in Halkidiki

The Tower of Ouranoupolis, the largest and best-preserved tower in Halkidiki, is an iconic landmark itself. Since 2005, the tower operates as a museum showcasing findings from the region and the history of the building itself. It houses exhibits from antiquity, with the main attractions being two Corinthian-type bronze helmets from the 6th century BC, found in Mount Athos, among many other discoveries and objects from ancient Akanthos, Sidirokausia, and the nearby Monastery of Zygou.

The collection also includes objects from the pre-Christian, Early Christian, and Byzantine periods, with a notable exhibit being the seal of Athanasios the Athonitis from the 10th century BC. The last two residents of the tower, Joice and Sydney Loch, a couple of philanthropists who lived there during the 20th century and aided refugees arriving in Ouranoupolis after the Asia Minor Catastrophe, are honored with a special section dedicated to their life and work.

The Tower of Ouranoupolis is located 130 kilometers away from the center of Thessaloniki and 116 kilometers from the airport.
