Fallen Airmen Memorial

Dedicated to the airmen who lost their lives in the line of duty

The Fallen Airmen Memorial is located on the seaside boulevard of Megalou Alexandrou Avenue in Thessaloniki, near Kallidopoulou. Created by sculptor Antonia Papatzanaki, the memorial design was selected through a competition and serves as a tribute to the Hellenic Air Force and the fallen airmen.

The monument is characterized by its simplicity and clarity of design, conveying a powerful message through the symbols it employs. The central element is a granite pilot's helmet, a reference to the airmen from the Balkan Wars period. Beside the helmet is a fragment of an aircraft's fuselage and, vertically, a wing from a PZL Pezetel plane—a Polish-made aircraft still used today in Greece for firefighting in remote areas.

With these simple yet powerful symbols, the memorial expresses the city's gratitude to the air force and its members, who selflessly served the country.
