The Black Statue in Giannitsa

A Tribute to the Fighters of the 1912 Liberation

The "Black Statue," as it is called by the residents of Giannitsa due to its dark bronze finish, was erected in the city in 1926 to honor those who fell in the battle for the city's liberation from the Ottomans in 1912.

Created by the sculptor Grigoris Zevgolis, the monument is located at the eastern entrance of the city. It is a triadic, pyramidal composition made of bronze.

The Monument is a notable example of Greek sculpture from the interwar period. Having endured prolonged wars, the Asia Minor Catastrophe, and the resulting refugee crisis, Greek art of this era sought to restore a sense of harmony, order, and balance.
