Thessaloniki State Conservatory - former Ottoman Bank

A cultural institution housed in an emblematic building of the city

The State Conservatory of Thessaloniki is located in the city centre, on Frangon Street. It is one of the most recognizable cultural institutions of the city. The building that houses the Conservatory originally housed the Ottoman Bank and has historical and architectural value.

The Ottoman Bank was established in the late 19th century and served as one of the most important financial institutions in the region. The building was designed by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli and completed around 1900 to serve the financial needs of Ottoman citizens and investors in Thessaloniki.

The building incorporates elements from the neoclassical and oriental styles, with a majestic façade, ornately decorated windows and domes. The interiors were carefully designed to serve the bank's functions, with rich decorative elements that evoke the Ottoman tradition.

After the liberation of Thessaloniki in 1912, the building changed many uses until it housed the Thessaloniki State Conservatory in 1950. Since then, it has offered training in various musical instruments, phonetics and music theory.

The State Conservatory has a significant presence in the cultural life of the city, organising concerts, events and educational programmes. The historical value of the building combined with its cultural function makes it a valuable space for art and education in Thessaloniki.
