Bust of Manolis Andronikos
Bust of Manolis Andronikos
Dedicated to the great Greek archaeologist
The bust of Manolis Andronikos, one of the most famous archaeologists of Greece, is located in the park of YMCA, in a key and symbolic spot. The bust was placed there on 30 March 1997, five years after his death, and was donated by the Thessaloniki Cultural Development Group.
The work was created by the sculptor Efthimis Kaleyras and realistically depicts the figure of Andronikos as he is known and recognised by the general public. The location of the bust is particularly significant, as it is situated between the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, where many of the treasures discovered by Andronikos are on display, and the statue of Philip II of Macedonia, whose tomb he discovered himself in Vergina, a discovery that made him world famous. This position highlights the importance of Andronikos' work and his contribution to archaeology and Greek cultural heritage.
