Bust of Mordecai Frizis

The first Greek senior officer to die in the Greek-Italian War

The bust of Mardochaios Frizis, the work of sculptors Yannis Bardis and Tasos Maniatakos, was placed in Thessaloniki in 2007. The bust was donated by the American Hellenic Congress and the unveiling took place on 8 June 2007, in the presence of the then mayor, Vassilis Papageorgopoulos.

Mardochaios Frisi, the first Greek senior officer to fall during the Helleno-Italian War, is depicted wearing his military uniform and insignia, thus paying respect and recognition to his bravery. The bust is located in the Jewish Martyrs' Square, opposite the Hippocrates Hospital, at the junction of Papanastasiou and Karamanlis Streets. This work is a tribute not only to the memory of Frizis, but also to the history of Greek Jews and their role in the history of Greece.
