Monastery of Agios Georgios of the Hill

The monastery on the hill of Kilkis

The Monastery of the same name is built on the hill of Agios Georgios, which rises north of the city of Kilkis at 369 meters. In the center of a green area overlooking the urban fabric, a pole of attraction for hiking, cycling, and running, the Monastery of Agios Georgios of the Hill was founded in the middle of the 19th century and houses remarkable wood carving and painting decoration.

The Katholikon is a typical example of Macedonian temple architecture of the time, in the type of a three-aisled wooden-roofed basilica. The decoration on the ceiling, with geometric, floral motifs dates to 1879. Impressive is the wooden iconostasis of the Temple, in which the illustrated Pulpit and the old Despotic throne stand out.
