Aliakmonas River
Aliakmonas River
The longest river in Greece.
The Aliakmonas River, a vital source of life for the entire Imathia region, flows calmly for decades, forming a stunning natural valley along the border with Kozani. In this area, the Sfikia hydroelectric dam has been developed, utilizing a significant part of the water resources of the municipality and, by extension, the entire region.
Aliakmonas is an ancient river, and its name derives from the words “alas” (salt, sea) and “akmon” (anvil).
According to Greek mythology, Aliakmonas was a river god, son of Oceanus and Tethys. Oceanus was believed to be a vast river encircling the earth, while Tethys was one of the Titans, daughter of Uranus and Gaia. Another version states that Aliakmonas’ father was Palastinos, the king of Thrace, and his mother was Pierida, one of the nine mortal daughters of Pierus, king of Pieria, and Eudippe. Palastinos deeply loved his son, and when he learned of Aliakmonas’ death in battle, he threw himself into the Konasos River, which was then renamed Palastinos (today’s Strymonas).
An ancient tradition says that sheep drinking water from the Aliakmonas would change color and turn white. This tradition is confirmed by the Latin author Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD), who noted that “those in Macedonia who want white sheep lead them to Aliakmonas, while those who want black sheep lead them to Axios.”
Aliakmonas is also connected to significant events in Macedonian history, such as the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Macedonian Struggle (1904-1908), the liberation of Veria in 1912, and the resistance during the occupation (1941-1944).
The part of the river that flows through Imathia offers visitors a sense of calm and serenity, ideal for recreation and nature activities. The lush vegetation along its banks supports a variety of flora and fauna, making it a perfect spot for birdwatching and nature walks. Whether you seek a relaxing escape into nature or wish to explore the history and traditions of the region, Aliakmonas offers a unique experience that will remain unforgettable.
The lakeside area of Aliakmonas is a protected zone and is part of the Natura 2000 network (GR1210002).
