Church of the Resurrection of Christ the Savior

The Byzantine church of the 14th century

The Church of the Savior Christ in Veria, one of the most impressive and well-preserved Byzantine churches in the city, was built in the late 13th century by Xenos Psalidas and completed in the early 14th century by his wife, Euphrosyne.

It was granted by Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos to the hieromonk Ignatios Kalothetos, a friend of Gregory Palamas, as the katholikon (main church) of a monastery. Dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ, the church features rare frescoes painted by the great Thessalonian iconographer Georgios Kalliergis, while the exterior frescoes were completed in 1727.
