The Ancient Theater of Aigai

A Central Hub of Cultural and Social Life in the Ancient Macedonian Capital

The theatre, together with the neighboring palace, forms a unified architectural complex that was designed and constructed in the second half of the 4th century BC.

Based on the recent dating of the palace and its corresponding features, the theatre took its final form during the reign of Philip II, who was assassinated in this very space in 336 BC. The Theatre of Aigai, one of the largest theatres of the Classical period, was abandoned in the mid-2nd century BC during the destruction of the city by the Romans.
