Museum in the Crypt of the Church of Agios Dimitrios

In the basement of the Church of Agios Dimitrios, on the homonymous street, is the ancient crypt, which houses the Crypt Museum of Agios Dimitrios. The site was discovered after the fire of 1917 and excavations revealed that it was a Roman bath and pre-existed in the Christian Church. According to tradition, in the area of the crypt, Agios Dimitrios was buried in 360 AD, an officer in the Roman army who had embraced Christianity. Dimitrios was proclaimed a Saint and today he is the patron saint of Thessaloniki.

The museum includes exhibits from various periods, both early Christian and Byzantine sculptures from the 5th to the 14th century, as well as the findings that came to light from the excavations of the 20th century. The exhibition is divided into seven rooms, covering the historical eras of the Temple, while the showcases present the findings from the embankment of the church during the Ottoman period. Admission to the Temple and the Crypt is free for guests.
