Acropolis of Stagira

View from the Highest Point of the Archaeological Site

At the top of the southern hill of the archaeological site of Stagira, near Olympiada, stands the Acropolis of the ancient city, strategically built to overlook the surrounding area. The choice of location, higher than the rest of the city, allowed the inhabitants to observe the surrounding region within a large radius, as evidenced by the findings unearthed by archaeological excavations.

Visitors can admire the entire ancient fortification and see the way in which ancient Stagira was protected from invasions. The Acropolis gives the impression of a tight, triangular stronghold, attached to the walls on one side and surrounded by fortification walls on the other two sides. It also features small, rectangular interior spaces with storage jars for food and a water tank.

In addition to the historical significance of the area, the Acropolis provides the best view towards the Strymonian Gulf.
