Ancient Akanthos

The archaeological site of the great city-port of antiquity near Ierissos

Ancient Akanthos, located on the Athos peninsula in Halkidiki, is an important archaeological site with a rich history dating back to the 7th century BC. It was founded by Andean colonists and quickly developed into an important commercial and cultural centre of antiquity.

The ruins of Ancient Acanthus reveal a city with a well-designed layout, impressive walls and public buildings. Important finds include parts of the fortifications, temple foundations and various grave goods that testify to the city's economic and cultural prosperity.

Akanthos was known for its coins, which bear representations of lions, indicative of local worship and symbolism. During the Persian Wars, the city played an important role and was later incorporated into the Kingdom of Macedonia.

Today, visitors can tour the archaeological site and admire the remains of this glorious city, while enjoying the beautiful natural setting of the area. Ancient Akanthos is a precious treasure of the Greek cultural heritage.
