Folklore Museum of Afytos
A Journey through Time in an Architectural Monument
The Afytos Folklore Museum is housed in a magnificent, architecturally unique preserved building from 1889, donated by the Aletras family. Established in 1980, it offers an interesting journey through time, showcasing the life, customs, and culture of the local community over the past centuries. Wood and stone dominate the rooms, depicting the traditional dwelling of Afytos through the hundreds of exhibits originating from collections and donations of the residents.
The basement hosts an exhibition of livestock farming tools, while the first floor brings to life the traditional house of Afytos, featuring everyday use tools, ceramics, vessels, furniture, small items, utensils, costumes, and anything used by the region's inhabitants in both recent and distant past. Visitors will also encounter agricultural tools, paintings, photographs in their frames, a rich library, and artworks. Periodic exhibitions are organized within the museum, further highlighting the folklore element.
In the already beautiful village of Afytos, where the traditional character remains strong despite intense tourist development, a visit to the Folklore Museum is the most suitable way to connect with the contemporary history of the place and filter the modern settlement against the backdrop of its everyday life from an era so close yet simultaneously distant when compared to the pace of today's life.
