Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki

A Space of Memory and History for the City’s Significant Jewish Community

The Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki, established in 2001, is a key center for the memory and education of the city’s rich Jewish history and heritage. Located at 13 Agiou Mina Street, in the heart of Thessaloniki, the museum is housed in one of the few buildings that survived the great fire of 1917.

The building, constructed in 1904, originally hosted commercial establishments owned by Jewish merchants. It stands as an example of the urban architecture of the period and was preserved from the devastating fire that reshaped Thessaloniki. The museum's renovations have been carried out with respect for its architectural identity, blending the old with the new.

The Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki features both permanent and temporary exhibitions that highlight the history of Thessaloniki's Jewish community, which was one of the largest and most significant in Europe until World War II. Through photographs, documents, everyday objects, and ritual artifacts, visitors can explore the life, culture, and contributions of the Jewish community to the development of Thessaloniki.

A major section of the museum is dedicated to the memory of the 50,000 Thessaloniki Jews who were murdered during the Holocaust. The museum also maintains an archive of historical documents and organizes educational programs and events aimed at spreading knowledge and promoting tolerance.
