Church of the Prophet Elijah

One of Thessaloniki's Most Notable and Visited Byzantine Churches, Built in the 14th Century

The Church of the Prophet Elijah is located on Olympiados Street in the Upper Town (Ano Poli) of Thessaloniki. It is one of the city's most significant Byzantine monuments, dating back to the 14th century. The church is a prominent example of late Byzantine architecture.

The church features a complex cross-shaped plan with two large domes, distinguishing it from other churches of its time. Inside, the church retains exceptional examples of Byzantine frescoes, although they have suffered wear over the centuries.

The Church of the Prophet Elijah is also intertwined with Thessaloniki's history and tradition. It has survived through various periods, including the Ottoman conquest when it was converted into a mosque. After Thessaloniki's liberation in 1912, the church was restored to its original Christian function.

Today, the Church of the Prophet Elijah is one of the most well-known and visited Byzantine churches in Thessaloniki, offering visitors not only spiritual upliftment but also a deep connection to the city's historical past.
