Nedelkou Building

The building on Egnatia Street, a typical example of interwar architecture

The Nedelkos Building is one of the most important historical buildings of Thessaloniki, located in the city centre and is a typical example of inter-war architecture.

The building was constructed in the 1920s by Ioannis Nedelkos, a businessman of the time, who wanted to create a space that would accommodate both commercial activities and residences. This period was crucial for the development of Thessaloniki, as the city was trying to rebuild itself after the devastating fire of 1917, which had destroyed much of its centre.

The Nedelkos building is a typical example of interwar urban architecture, with influences from eclecticism and modernism. It has four storeys and an imposing façade, which stands out for its neoclassical elements, such as the decorative cornices, the large windows with bold frames and the central entrance surrounded by columns.

The use of materials such as marble and stone, combined with the symmetrical arrangement of the architectural elements, gives the building a sense of elegance and stability. The decorative elements are carefully considered, while the use of geometric motifs and reliefs adds to the aesthetics of the building.

Since its construction, the Nedelkou building has housed various commercial and residential activities. During the 20th century, the building underwent various changes and renovations, adapting to the needs of the city at any given time. Today, the building remains one of the emblematic landmarks of Thessaloniki, highlighting the historical and cultural heritage of the city.
