Moni Lazariston

Moni Lazariston, an important religious and cultural monument of Thessaloniki, is located in the Stavroupoli area, in the western suburbs of the city. It was founded in 1886 by the monks of the Lazarist Order, who came from France and followed the example of Saint Vincent de Paul, the founder of the order. The mission of the Lazarists was to provide education and healthcare to the poor and needy.

The monastery's building is characterized by its imposing architecture, which combines neoclassical and Renaissance elements. Initially, it was used as a monastery and educational center, but over the years, it hosted various activities, such as serving as a hospital during World War I.

After the Lazarists left the area, the monastery fell into disuse for several decades until it was declared a protected monument in 1980. Its renovation began in the 1990s, and today it stands as one of Thessaloniki's most important cultural venues. It houses the National Theatre of Northern Greece and the Contemporary Art Museum, and it hosts numerous cultural and artistic events.

Moni Lazariston has now become a vibrant part of the city's cultural life, blending its historical heritage with contemporary artistic creation.
