Sculpture “Citizens Reading a Newspaper and Discussing”
One of Thessaloniki’s Most Distinctive Outdoor Sculptures
The sculpture “Citizens Reading a Newspaper and Discussing”, also known simply as “Citizens”, by Manolis Tzobanakis, has adorned Agia Sofia Square in Thessaloniki since 1989. It stands out as one of the city’s most iconic pieces of public art.
This bronze sculpture depicts three human figures intently reading a newspaper held by the central figure, likely the father of the family. Through an abstract style, Tzobanakis captures a familiar scene of Greek daily life, evoking discussions about politics and current affairs. Beside them are metal railings that serve as a powerful symbol—they may represent a garden fence, but also barriers to free speech or even elements of social oppression.
The artwork reflects the citizens’ concern and engagement with news and political developments, bringing to light an era when the newspaper was a primary source of information and a central medium of public discourse.
